Once, when I had the privilege to talk to medics of German special operations forces, they showed me all of their equipment. In addition to tourniquets, bandages and infusions, I suddenly discovered something unusual: a neatly folded, small German flag.

Of course I wanted to know what it was all about, to which the medics replied the following: Whenever possible, they try to place the flag above the patient, whether in a tent, field camp, or vehicle. The injured soldier may not be able to hear or his consciousness may be otherwise impaired. But as soon as he sees the three familiar colors, he knows he is in the hands of his comrades, who will care for him under any circumstances. In addition, the flag means a piece of home in an otherwise hostile environment.

My respect for medics went up another 200% that day.

And it shows something else: The flag of a nation is much more than just a piece of cloth.
